This world seems to
perpetually be at war… This year’s calendar contains several reminders of a few
greatest battles of all time - the battles at Kursk, Stalingrad and Leningrad.
All three were the turning points in the
greatest war of the 20thcentury
- World War II, known in the entire post-Soviet world as the Great Patriotic
War.
Let’s get together to one of
the newest war movies and to discuss several yet thorny questions that Russian
society seems to still be preoccupied with:
What really led to the start of
the war?
How moral was the creation of
the German-Soviet non-aggression pact?
Why does (as one of the Russkiy
Mir Center’s guests put it) this past war remain almost a religion for several
generations of Russian/Soviet citizens?
Let’s
gather together and commemorate the start of the greatest
turn of events in Russian history that, instead of destroying the
country, brought with it an incredible growth. Come
celebrate the unity of the Soviet
people, and the daring feats and successes of the Soviet
Army! It is not in vain that the old song
goes, "…if our country calls us to march for our native land, we will all go
to holy battle”!
