The Russian/Soviet science fiction
movies (with all of the related sub-genres – fantasy, utopia/dystopia, quest,
etc.). Each of the monthly screenings will be preceded with a short
Introduction and followed by a discussion (in English). All films will be shown
with English subtitles. The series has
been created to commemorate the dates of several extraordinary events in world
and Russian history. The year 2011 is significant! It is: the 300th anniversary of Mikhail
Lomonosov’s birth, the 90th anniversary of the birth of Stanislaw
Lem, the 145th anniversary of the birth of H.G. Wells, the 145th
anniversary of the birth of F. Nansen, and perhaps most notable, the 50th
anniversary of Yuri Gagarin’  s pioneering space flight. All of these dates have very strong ties to
